Three Essential Guidelines on Preparing for Forklift Transportation

If you are planning on moving your forklift from one location to another, you must acquire the right means of transportation. In general, the forklift can be used in commercial and industrial spaces. Unfortunately, if exposed to the harsh conditions of the road, the equipment will be susceptible to damage. Under ideal circumstances, you should hire an experienced machinery transport contractor for the moving project. However, if you have a flatbed truck, you can perform the task without professional assistance. If you decide on this option, consider using the below tips to prepare your forklift for safe and efficient machinery transport.

Stabilise With Anchor Blocks

When transporting a forklift, you should think about installing some anchor blocks to stabilise the equipment. In simple terms, the forklift has operable wheels which might cause the entire machine to roll off the towing truck if left unsupported. You can purchase anchor blocks for your project from a hardware store or an industrial supplier. After obtaining these transport accessories, secure them to the flatbed truck. Then, you should drive the forklift up the ramp and place it behind the blocks. Finally, install more anchors behind the other wheels for complete stability.

Minimise Energy Hazards

You should prevent potential fuel hazards during the transportation of your forklift. By preparing your equipment correctly, you will avoid unpredictable and risky occurrences. If your forklift operates using propane, you should make sure that the fuel lines are entirely sealed. This practice will minimise the risk of leakages. If you have a conventional forklift which uses diesel or petrol, you should reduce the amount of fluid in the machinery before the towing process. Ideally, you should drain the tank to prevent spills which could translate into a fire. As an extra precaution, you should disengage the battery.

Secure the Equipment

Your forklift could still be vulnerable to movement on the flatbed truck even if you install the anchor blocks. The movement of the machinery and general vibrations could damage some internal components, shortening the service life of the forklift. Therefore, you should take additional measures to secure the equipment. You should acquire chains or heavy-duty nylon straps to keep the forklift in position on the flatbed. If necessary, you can install extra metal loops to the floor to keep the machinery contained. And, you must remember to engage the forklift's emergency brakes.

Finally, you should ensure that you can contact a roadside services provider in case of problems such as breakdowns during the forklift transportation process.
